During my time here at the University of Tennessee, I have completed three rotations of a CO-OP with EMJ Construction and a term internship with Crunk Engineering. With EMJ, I worked in the field on a senior living facility where I managed day-to-day operations including but not limited to: fire code, labor management, agency coordination, contractor coordination, and workforce management. There I learned the fundamentals of project management and how to mitigate excess costs within day-to-day job site management. With Crunk Engineering, I learned the principles of site design and layouts. My day to day tasks included: setting up CAD prints, designing site layouts, designing storm water systems, and coordination with government agencies.
Coming into the university, I started out as an electrical engineer and made the transition to civil after my freshman year. I made this switch as I felt the civil field suited me better as a career path. This switch was terrifying, but thanks to the Engineering Professional Practice I was able to complete a CO-OP in construction where I was able to find my passion for civil engineering. The EPP offers several great opportunities to learn and grow as both a student and engineer. The best thing you can do for your career is gain experience, so come by today and visit any ambassador and get started!
