Profile
I worked two summer internships with International Paper for their containerboard mill in Rome, GA. The first summer I was placed in the Paper Operations department where I helped in the section of the mill that dealt solely with the actual paper machine and not any other parts of the paper making process. I had a variety of projects in my specific area and helped with cost reduction, increased efficiency, and several other aspects. I would troubleshoot the day-to-day problems that the operations department had whether that was taking samples or fixing small technical issues. Last summer, I was placed in the Utilities Operations department which works to generate the power the mill runs on. My internship has been pretty similar to the first year with a lot of projects specific to my department which work on long term development, cost reduction, and increasing efficiency and organization. I also help manage the day-to-day problems while also learning as much as I can about the equipment around me.
I have learned a lot from both internships, and they have been impactful in solidifying what I want to do with my career. Prior to these internships I had never really worked in an engineering role, let alone in a manufacturing environment. I had no clue what I was going into and the first summer internship really opened my eyes to what my career could look like after graduation. I learned that a lot of the problems and processes you deal with, especially as a chemical engineer, differ greatly from the ideal we learn about in class. I have also learned how to work with all different kinds of people in different roles and various stages of their career.
Right now, my career aspirations are to hopefully intern at International Paper again next summer, then get a full time job with them in Rome after I graduate and continue to work my way up in International Paper. My internships have helped shape my career aspirations because the same place I have gone for my internships is where I would like to start and spend my career. I have really enjoyed my internships and find the work very interesting and challenging, and I would welcome the opportunity to continue with International Paper.
I am an avid sports fan, particularly baseball and hockey, and spend a lot of time watching and following sports. I also enjoy playing as many recreational sports games as my schedule allows.
